C. Taranu won European Championship, O. Šilt is the 7th

Catalin Taranu - mistr Evropy 2008 Catalin Taranu from Romania, 5 profesional dan, became the winner of the European Championship 2008, which took place in Leksand in Sweden.

Although Taranu has been among the European top players for more than 10 years, it was the first time that he became the master. Earlier he was for two times the second.

This year Alexander Dinerstein from Russia was the second, which is the third time for him to win the silver medal.

The third was last year's champion Ilja Šikšin from Russia. Eighteen years old, rating over 2700 and nowadays the fifth strongest European born player. All the three players had 7 points out of 10. Also the fourth Pal Balogh from Magyar had 7 points.

In the open Championship the first was Park Jong-wook from Korea, who was the second last year in Villach, in 2005 in Prague the third. The second was last year's winner Hong Seok-uiovi, also form Korea. The third was Lai Yu-cheng from Tchajwanu. He was the only one to have six points after the sixth round, but then he lost three times in a line.

The Czech Republic was represented by Ondřej Šilt. For the first time in his career he defeated Catalin Taranu. But finally he had six points. Among the Europeans he is the seventh, all together the fifteenth.

Others from the Czech republic was Jana Hricová, who won 6 games out of ten and Miloš Podpěra, who had 4 points out of 5.

Together 718 players took part, which was more than in Prague in 2005.
