Jan Šimara won in Plzeň

Jan Šimara (foto: J. Šír) Jan Šimara now needs only 9 points to reach 5 dan. The last time that he proved his great form was the tournament in Plzeň where he won without any problems 5:0. That is his second victory in a Grand Prix tournament.

The second was Jan Prokop, who lost only with Jan Šimara. The third was Petr Cipra, who had 3 points, the same as Tomáš Grosser. The best player with two points was the fifth Alfred Effenberg from Austria.

Even from this list it is obvious, that there were not the strongest players at the tournament. Together there were only 36 players, from that only 7 dan players. There are a few reasons for such a weak participation. One of them was a clash with a European Pair Championship in Krakow. Also a few strong players from Plzeň did not participate. Another reason could have been the attractiveness of the tournament - prizes, accompanying programme etc. (In this case, you can make a comparison for instance with the tournament in Blansko, where 81 players took part).

The results of the tournament can be found here.
