The Czech team consisting of Ondřej Kruml, Lukáš Podpěra and Anička Podpěrová (with captain Jana Hricová) won the open championship of school teams in Germany – Hans Pietsch Memorial that took place during 22nd - 23rd September 2007 in Hamburg. The Czech team was the only one not to lose a single match and that both in the primary group of sixteen members and in the final which was played by four most successful teams playing each one with each other. Ondřej Kruml and Lukáš Podpěra even won all their games.
It must be said, that our team profited from the fact that, as opposed to home teams, for foreign teams it was enough to have only two players from one school. Ondřej Kruml from Brno could then play with players from Gymnázium Nad Alejí and contributed to the victory.
At the second place ended the team from the Secondary school of Prim Levi in Berlin. This team also became the master of Germany as it was the best one from the home teams. The third was a team from the Secondary school of Albrecht Dürer from Berlin.
The tournament yearly takes place in honour of Hans Pietsche (in the picture), one of few Europeans who managed to become a professional player. Unfortunately, this promising player tragicly died in 2003 during promotional tour in the Middle America. He was 34 years old and had 4 profi-dan. For us he is interesting especially because of two reasons: the first is, that his mother was born Czech, the second, that till his death he was a teacher of Ondřej Šilt during his stay in Japan.
The results and other information are here. You can read a detailed reportage by Lukáš Podpěra on eGoban.
